As part of our follow-up to the progress the Daughters of Zion CNPP grantee is making within Memphis, Shelby County, and beyond- we are highlighting the weekly Entrepreneur of the Week award. When asked why Shaunice Rene Maddox was selected as the entrepreneur of the week, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. declared, “ Shaunice is a standout in the beauty industry. She’s from Los Angeles so she brings to Memphis a special vibe that is commonly seen in Hollywood. She specializes in making her clients look, smell,  and feel beautiful. I should know because I am one of them. Hair, make-up, hands and feet if it’s related to beauty she can do it. Shaunice has a passion and drive to give that should motivate us all as entrepreneurs. I am so glad to announce her as the entrepreneur of the week. 

Shaunice Rene Maddox answered several questions for the entrepreneur of the week.

Q: Please tell us your full name and the name of your business.

A: My name is Shaunice Rene Maddox and the name of my business is Misty B Beauty Parlor. 

Q: How did you come up with the unique name of your business? 

A: I am an artist. I am creative. I sing. Misty B is a part of who I am because I am Misty Blue and so I put it together. I put beauty all in one and we got Misty B Beauty Parlor.

Q. How long have you owned your business?

A. I have had my business now for 11 years.

Q. What made you decide to come into your beauty parlor business?

A. After spending so much time being a single mom, getting all these dead-end jobs, and quitting because I never liked the rules or the way the corporate world treats you when you have children, I was sitting on the edge of my bed one day and I was thinking to myself what is it that I can do that keeps me in the loop of all the things that I love and I enjoy? I came up with beauty school and I did it, loved it, and finished it and I have been doing it ever since.

Q. What services do you provide?

A. Hair, nails, makeup. Anything you can almost dream of. If you need that special hair do just send it to me, we’ll have a consultation, and I’ll make it happen. Nails are really my thing though, so if you want nails come to me.

Q.What made you specialize in hair and nails and offer both services?

A. I just feel that I love every aspect of the beauty industry. Because the beauty industry changes, being able to provide services that are year round for my client is very important to me. 

Q. What are some of the most memorable compliments that you have gotten from some of your clients?

A. “Oooooh it feels so good to be able to talk to you and tell you what I want.” “ Ooooooh this is soooo nice.” From “I’m so glad that you helped me fix this problem” to “thank you for showing up at the last minute for my event for someone canceling on me at the last minute.” Just being readily available is my clients biggest compliments. 

Q. How did you find out about the Daughters of Zion Community Navigator Pilot Program?

A. I was on instagram, I am a part of the SBA, and they linked to market from what you are searching and I got a message in regards to the program and then I contacted you guys. I called because it seemed like a great program that I should be a part of and I have been a part of it ever since.

Q.What are some of the most likable and enjoyable things that you have gotten out of the program?

A. I enjoy meeting new people every time that I am there. I also enjoy when Dr. Kiner lets us know weekly the 10 different things that can help us to become billionaires. It’s always a reminder to me of those signature things that make you and set you apart.

Q. What would you say to another business owner or prospective business owner about coming out to be a part of the Daughters of Zion Community Navigator Pilot Program?

A. I would tell them that it’s a great program to be a part of and it’s your time to shine so get up, get down there, find the resources, find people who are just like you so that you can also know that what you want to do is reality. Daughters of Zion is here to help you and I love it. We all network, we all help each other, and we all support each other. 

Q. What would you say to someone that is looking to bring, not just themselves, but their daughters to you, their families to you? Why should they come to you instead of the other hundreds of nail techs and cosmetologists throughout our region?

A.The one and biggest thing of all time is cleanliness and making sure that I provide good products to help your nails to be strong and with strength. I think that in the industry we lack people that care about the cleanliness of the services they provide from the tools and the items that they use, so, I believe that sets me apart because that is very important to me. 

Q. What are some of the products or tools that you use to set you apart?

A. I am an essentials oil junkie because I believe that essential oils are very healing so I use them in almost every foot bath, every manicure or pedicure. I also make my own potions so that it can help soothe you. I also provide wellness for you, something that is good for your breathing, just different things that can help aid your body. If you tell me what is going on with you I can put it together and have you walk out of here feeling like a new person. 

Q. What took you to the level of wanting to aid a person’s body outside of doing their hair and nails?

A. I believe that your nail service should be fulfilling, not just only making your nails or toes look beautiful, but also be healing to you. I have learned that we detox through our feet so while we are soaking we give our bodies a chance to release all of those negative things by just adding a few drops of essential oils.

Q. Is there anything else you would want to tell the world that is reading this article?

A. Don’t sleep on your girl because you are going to want your nails to look like you just stepped off the red carpet because I can make it happen.
