As part of our follow-up to the progress the Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP grantee is making within Memphis, Shelby County, and beyond- we are highlighting the weekly Entrepreneur of the Week Award. Dineka Thomas was chosen as an entrepreneur of the week, and when asked why, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. declared, “ Dineka Thomas is so humble and hard-working. She is everything you would expect from a single mother, of 3, who started everything by herself. Dineka is posed for exponential growth. She has what it takes to be a high income entrepreneur. I am so glad that after being on the sidelines with the SBA CNPP most of 2022 she has decided 2023 would be the year she would take advantage of everything the program has to offer. I plan to be right by her side cheering for her every step of the way.

Dineka Thomas answered several questions for the Entrepreneur of the Week.

Q: Please tell us your full name and the name of your business.

A: Hello, my name is Dineka Thomas and I’m the owner of Lily Home Care Services. I’ve been in the field for at least 10 to 11 years. I’ve been the owner of my own for five years. I’ve been trying to get it off the floor since 2000. It’s very hard, but I’m picking it up and I’ve learned that you can’t stop, you’ve always got to keep going.

It’s been challenging these five years. I’ve been on my own for the whole five years. I had two or three clients, but I always find myself working for myself, because people don’t want to work for the amount of money or whatever. But, I’m always pushing myself for my people. I’m always working for my people. I’m always going beyond and above for my people. I have two lands I’m trying to get up and running for home health care also.

Q: Where did that spirit come from of you doing more than what’s required, going the extra mile? Where did you learn that from?

A: I have a grandma, and the older she’s getting, I would sit with her. She has like dementia, therefore, I don’t want no one else taking care of her. I wanted to take care of her myself. People not going to take care of your family like you’ll treat them.

Q: What separates you as a business owner from other people who are in your field?

A: I use my income that I don’t have… I’m a single mom of three and I use my own income. I don’t have any grants or loans, or anything.

Q: What have you learned from Daughters of Zion?

A: I learned to get out and talk more, to talk to people more. People are here to help you, you’re not alone.

Q: How did you find out about Daughters of Zion?

A: I get emails a lot of times, but years now I just never came. And I always tell somebody to come with me and we’ll go, but this time I was like, I’m coming for myself. So, that’s what came to me.

Q: How did it impact you today?

A: It’s helpful, it’s a lot of help. The class provides a lot of information, and motivated me to make me keep going,  because it’s not the first business, it’s the second business that I have. I’m also trying to get my brokery license going also.

Q: What do you want potential customers to know about you?

A: I never give up. I’m a Black owner of a woman-owned business.  I’m here to give a legacy for my grandkids, not just for my kids. I know I have grandkids coming up even though my kids are young, they’ll have kids someday.

Q: Why should we come to your business over all the other businesses out here in Memphis?

A: Not only do I try to help the Black low income community, I try to help veterans, disabled, and low-income people that’s everywhere. If you call me you will see my service and worth ethic is second to none. Just give me a chance.

Thank you
