How Mid-South kids can stay ‘engaged’ during winter break

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – According to the Memphis Police Department, two teenagers were arrested for breaking into cars in the parking lot at the Oak Court mall Thursday.
It happened just one day after area schools started their winter break.
FOX13 has done many stories surrounding juvenile crime, which is a growing challenge; however, the Founder of Heal the Hood Foundation believes parents must be more intentional during the break.
“It’s really important for a parent to have the conversation with their kids now about where you are, what you are doing, check-in times, making sure that they are engaged,” said LaDell Beamon, the nonprofit’s founder.
FOX13 searched for Winter Break camps online and found that Memphis Parks offers free camps throughout the city.
And one parent, Kelsi Harth, believes this is a perfect time to learn about a child.
“Ask him what he likes to do and try to do those things he likes to cook; letting them be of help is the biggest thing that will keep them engaged,” Harth said.
