On May 20, 2023, Corey Travis of the Memphis Youth Arts Initiative joined Rosha Lewis of The Glass Star, Tinieka Thrailkill of Ruby Van Specialty Services, LLC, and 67 other small business entrepreneurs from around Memphis, Tennessee. Together they participated in a Masterclass seminar hosted by Daughters of Zion and featuring Deshmon Reed, CPA owner of D. Reed & Associates PLLC based in Fort Worth Texas.
Over 50 entrepreneurs attended in person and the remaining on Zoom as the seminar focused on empowering small business owners to take control of their financial books and to better understand the various business structures available to them. Throughout the seminar, participants actively engaged with Mr. Reed, asking questions and taking notes as he expertly explained complex subjects like tax law and filing requirements.
For Mr. Reed, the seminar was a resounding success. Speaking after the event, he said, “Today’s Master Class Seminar was great, engaging, and enlightening… the business owners were attentive, engaged and seemed eager to attain more information.”
As the seminar progressed, it became clear to participants that the insights they were gaining would be invaluable in unlocking new opportunities for their businesses. Pat Sipp, owner of Benchmark Realtors, felt particularly energized by what she learned. “Amazing workshop. It was just what I needed to structure my business so that I can get the best tax advantages. And I learned how my business can pay me and my family.”
Meanwhile, Corey Travis found that the seminar offered an abundance of valuable information. “It was a wonderful session with an abundance of valuable information,” he said. “It was great to be able to interact and learn from other business owners and to get expert advice from Deshmon Reed.”
Tinieka Thrailkill of Ruby Van Specialty Services, LLC echoed these sentiments, saying, “I appreciate his tips and especially breaking down the different business tax filings.”
Rosha Lewis, The Glass Star seemed thankful to have had the opportunity to even attend the seminar saying “ I appreciate how Daughters of Zion reached out to me to inform me about this meeting. Mr. Reed did a great job explaining things .”
Perhaps most meaningfully, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. of Daughters of Zion, who invited Mr. Reed to speak at the seminar, felt that the Masterclass perfectly embodied Administrator Isabella Guzman’s vision for the SBA. “This is another shining moment for our SBA CNPP small business clients,” he said. “It perfectly aligns us with what SBA Administrator Isabella Guzman said at the 2023 SXSW conference- we want our small business clients to have ‘that drive to create prosperity, to build wealth, to try to enter into spaces that they’ve not been able to before…’ I think today’s Masterclass seminar helped to spark that drive to create prosperity and build wealth through taking advantage of the tax laws and setting up their business in the most appropriate way to do so.”
Overall, the Masterclass seminar offered a valuable resource for small business entrepreneurs in Memphis. By bringing together expert speakers like Deshmon Reed, and providing a supportive atmosphere for entrepreneurs to learn, Daughters of Zion has demonstrated its commitment to helping entrepreneurs in the community unlock their full financial potential.
As these small business owners continue to build their businesses, it is clear that empowerment and access to expert resources like those provided by Daughters of Zion will be more important than ever before. By providing these resources and supporting business owners in their efforts to grow and thrive, organizations like Daughters of Zion can help create a brighter and more prosperous future for communities across Memphis and beyond.
