MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis City Council approved an emergency relief fund on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in response to now the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history.

The Memphis Emergency Meal Provision and Housing Interim Services Loan Fund (M.E.M.P.H.I.S. Fund) will allocate $2.5 million from the city’s unassigned fund balance, which will create a zero-interest emergency loan fund.

According to the city’s press release, the Division of Finance will administer the funds while the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis will become the fiscal agent.

The following nonprofit service organizations will receive the funds:

  • Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA)
  • The Hospitality Hub
  • Mid-South Food Bank
  • Feed the Needy

“These organizations will use the funds to provide emergency food and housing assistance to Memphis residents who have been affected by the loss of federal income and benefits,” the city said in its statement.

The council approved to use $260,000 to support direct assistance programs for residents affected by the shutdown as well. The fund will go to MLGW Citizen’s Assistance Program.

“The Memphis City Council remains committed to protecting and uplifting its citizens,” city officials said. “Through partnership and swift action, the Memphis City Council reaffirms its dedication to ensuring that no resident is left without essential support or care.”
