MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mayor of Arlington was cited for shoplifting after he was caught stealing shorts from a department store at Wolfchase Galleria over the weekend, records show.
In a statement, Mayor Michael Wissman called it “an unfortunate misunderstanding.”
According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers were called around 3:15 p.m. Friday to Dillard’s at the shopping mall in Cordova. There, they learned that a man later identified as Wissman tried to steal a pair of Chubbies shorts — valued at $70, police said.
MPD said Wissman, 54, was cited for a misdemeanor shoplifting.
In a statement, the Arlington mayor called it a “misunderstanding” and said he hopes to get the situation resolved. His full statement is below:
“While I was shopping at Dillard’s on Friday, there was an unfortunate misunderstanding. I appreciate the professionalism and courtesy of those involved. I look forward to resolving this issue.”
