Berclair Elementary being treated for flea infestation, MSCS confirms

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) confirmed Tuesday that Berclair Elementary is being treated for a flea infestation.
“MSCS is actively addressing a pest issue at Berclair Elementary to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff,” the district said in a statement. MSCS added that only one of the three buildings on campus had been affected.
The fleas were found in one of three buildings at Berclair Elementary. The bugs bit one student multiple times, according to the school district.
“Out of an abundance of caution, enhanced treatment of the building and school grounds is taking place today, including fogging, outdoor treatment of the entire grounds, and carpet steaming in the building where fleas have been detected,” the district said. “One student received care over the weekend for multiple flea bites.”
MSCS said its goal is to make sure students and staff return to a safe environment.
One parent with two children at the school said the news isn’t that surprising.
“With the way it’s been this year with the fleas and all the insects, I mean, it’s surprising, but it’s not surprising. It’s sad for it to be on the child,” the parent said. “It’s very unfortunate and sad, but I’m glad that they caught the problem, and hopefully it gets fixed and taken care of.”
MSCS said they’ll keep parents informed as they continue treatment. The school district also stressed that the issue has not spread to the other two buildings on campus.
