MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Governor Bill Lee signed a bill allowing school board elections to be held at the same time as county commission elections and members to have the same term limits.
On Friday, House Bill 1383 was passed, authorizing that elections for Tennessee school boards will be held at the same time as county commission elections.
According to the Tennessee General Assembly, school board members and county commissioners will also have the same term limits.
“If approved at the county level, all MSCS board seats will be up for election next year, and members will be limited to two consecutive 4-year terms,” said County Commissioner Mick Wright in a Facebook post.
The Senate passed the bill with 27 voting yes and six voting no.
“The Senate companion bill was sponsored by Senator Brent Taylor along with two others, including Paul Rose, who also represents part of Shelby County,” said County Commissioner Wright.
“The enacting resolution will be heard in the next meeting of the Shelby County Commission. Initial sponsors are Britney Thornton, Michael Whaley, and me,” said County Commissioner Wright.
