MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Students all across the country gathered in their classrooms Thursday to read with volunteer readers as part of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Day.

ABC24 headed to Snowden K-8 school and the Benjamin Hooks Library, where students enjoyed their time with the volunteers.

The annual event is aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of early childhood education programs, early literacy, and community involvement for all children.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools said it emphasizes the importance of literacy in a child’s education.

“We often say it takes a village to save children, to raise children,” said MSCS board chairwoman Althea Greene. “It takes a village to read to children, so I’m encouraging all families, let’s read to a child every day.”

This year’s spotlighted book was ‘With Lots of Love’ by Jenny Torres Sanchez, about a girl from Central America who moves to the United States and learns to adjust to her new life while missing those she left behind.
