Could freezing temperatures lead to more water main breaks?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – From East Memphis to Bartlett, Mid-South utility crews worked to repair water main breaks on Wednesday.

With freezing temperatures still in the forecast, residents worried about a drop in water pressure.

“We try to buy bottled water,” said Erick Bautista, an East Memphis resident.

“A couple days ago when we went, there were none, so now we’re trying to stock up before the next wave hits us,” said Makenzie Edwards.

A spokeswoman for Memphis, Light, Gas and Water told FOX13 that crews worked on two breaks Wednesday. The first was at 3604 Midland Avenue near the University of Memphis. The second was at 5291 Longacre Avenue near Bartlett.

Thankfully, as of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the spokeswoman said MLGW is having no water pressure issues.

However, many Memphis residents say this long freeze reminds them of the freeze that preceded the six-day boil water advisory during Christmas of 2022.

Residents bought up bottles of purified water and boiled their tap water to cook for their families. Some restaurants had to temporarily close.

FOX13 will continue to monitor any and every major water main break in the coming days.

Edwards is trying to do whatever she can to prepare her home.

“We have been dripping our faucets, so we’re just hoping for the best,” she said.
