As part of our follow-up to the progress the Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP grantee is making within Memphis, Shelby County, and beyond- we are highlighting their weekly Entrepreneur of the Week Award. A  was chosen as entrepreneur of the week, and when asked why, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. declared, “ Week after week we bring you the best of the best- and Oscar is most definitely amongst the best of the best! Oscar has been with the DOZ SBA CNPP almost from Day 1. He started out very skeptical of who we were and what we were doing but when he believes in something you can’t shake his determination and faithfulness. Oscar is a natural-born entrepreneur. Everything he does is so flawless and seamless. He is an inspiration to me and so many business leaders in our community. Oscar is like the elder statesmen of what it takes to be successful. When I earned his trust it was one of the highlights of my short SBA CNPP career. This program has introduced me to some of the best people in our metropolitan area and beyond- A is amongst the cream of the crop.”

Q: What is your full name?

A:  Oscar Telford

Q:  What’s the name of your business?

A: OK Cleaning Service

Q: How long have you been in business?

A: We’ve been in business for 18 years.

Q: What made you start a cleaning company?

A: I believed that there was a need for someone to present a cleaning company that was affordable, and that was actually just a really good cleaning company.

Q: What are some of the attributes of your company that stands out from all the other cleaning companies that exist?

A: I think with us one of our key things is that we believe in doing the job right the first time, because a lot of times it seems as if it takes less time to do a job right than explain why it was done wrong. And that’s pretty much a motto that we live by. We go in, we do work, we’re very thorough. The little things that a lot of people may overlook, we give attention to detail.

Q: That’s awesome. And you told me that you have a contract with Mississippi Department of Education, and Department of Transportation.

A: That’s right. Yes, we do.

Q: How long have you been contracted with them?

A: Probably on and off for, I would say since 2013. We had the Mississippi Department of Education Welcome Center in Lula, Mississippi, we cleaned that for four years. We did one also in Itawamba County, a Welcome Center there as well. And currently we are doing one here in Hernando, Mississippi. So, we’ve been with MDOT for a few years now.

Q: That’s awesome that you can serve a diverse clientele from the state of Mississippi- the government, to  businesses,  and to residential clients.

A: Yes thank you.

Q:  What do you think makes you so diverse to be able to handle any kind of clientele?

A: I think, you know, the years of experience of cleaning that we’ve had. And we’ve done things from pressuring washing, window washing, stripping and waxing floors. Even residential cleaning for people who’ve sold their houses and things like that. So, we are pretty diverse in what we do. And I think that having that knowledge and expertise on all those different areas and stuff, has provided us with the opportunity to clean as we have.

Q: Awesome. You’ve been a long-time attendee of the Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP classes. How did you find out about the DOZ CNPP?

A: It was through the radio. I was actually just sitting in my car waiting before I went into one of the locations that we clean and I heard this advertisement. And it sounded like something that I would be interested in. And I took the phone number down, and gave a call, and I’ve been here pretty much ever since.

Q: How has the classes impacted you?

A: They’ve been life-changing. The knowledge and expertise that is coming from these classes has really inspired me to pursue, you know, my dreams of expanding my business. And my wife has come along with me on several occasions. And I think it’s, you know, given her the idea that this is something that she would want to do as well, start her own, so it’s been very good for us to attend these classes.

Q: What would you say to another prospective business owner who was thinking about joining these classes?

A: I would tell them that without a doubt, this is something that they need for their business, or for whatever type of organization they desire to start up because the information that they will gain here is second to none.

Q: And let me ask you the last question. What would you say to a potential customer that’s saying, “Well, I’m looking at several different businesses and OK Cleaning Service is on the list.” What would you say why they should come to you?

A: I think they should come to us because, again, we’re going to do the best job for a very affordable price. And I think that that’s two key things that most people look for, good workmanship and pricing. So, we’re going to provide both of those things.

Q: Awesome. Thank you so much, Oscar.

A: Thank you. Thank you.

Q: Congratulations, Entrepreneur of the Week.

A: Thank you. God bless you…
