As part of our follow-up to the progress the Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP grantee is making within Memphis, Shelby County, and beyond- we are highlighting the weekly Entrepreneur of the Week Award. Darrell Turner was chosen as entrepreneur of the week, and when asked why, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. declared, “ Darrell is the best! He has everything you look for in an entrepreneur. I can go on and on and I still wouldn’t say enough about this dynamic businessman. He has made Daughters of Zion a better organization just by his presence, wisdom, and experience. He’s been gone from Memphis for 38 years and upon his return to immediately utilize Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP resources to help build his brand gives me an indescribable feeling. Q: Where did your business name come from?
A: God gave it to me.
Q: What made you start a home healthcare agency?
A: It chose me. God chose me. I’m needed! And people, the love of people, especially older people. They need us. I have a heart for the elderly population.
Q: What’s a good story you want to share about your agency?
A: New Life Personal Care is going to be like no other agency. I saw it play out in my sister’s life. She was in the hospital for a week and I was there for her every single day. I would anoint her every day. She was responding to things she hadn’t been responding to before. I think we can see miracles like what happened for my sister happen to anymore we care for.
Q: Why do you think what happened with your sister can happen to other clients?
A: Because it’s the power of God. When God puts something in your heart to do something and you do it- what you don’t know is going to happen. And we only speak life to whomever we serve.
Q: You seem to love connecting with the business owners at the Saturday DOZ SBA CNPP Masterclass meetings – why do you feel so connected?
A: I found about Daughters of Zion from my sister. And every time I would come to town I made it a point to come to the Saturday Master Classes. I started connecting with the other business owners at Daughters of Zion and it started hitting me. It’s so much talent that comes together weekly. I started to think, ‘I can network with some of these business owners that love cooking and bring their talents to my agency and we work together as opposed to independently. I can’t wait to help promote Daughters of Zion, it’s going to be so much bigger than it is now. Daughters of Zion is going to grow more than you know. It’s getting hotter and it’s catching fire. That’s why I always say- ‘Daughters of Zion rocks!
Q: What other business owner(s) at DOZ are you excited about?
A: Gals at Rest, she just wants to sit with people. She inspired me. And the lady that came from Chicago who had the testimony about having a hard life, she helped me as well. Another home health agency came to the Saturday Classes and she referred me to the VA to get clients from the VA. The networking is very beneficial and it can be even more powerful because when you have people walking with you, you are prone to keep moving. When we come to the meetings on Saturdays, we have more to give and we look forward to seeing each other. We don’t have to be a crab in a barrel anymore. That’s why ever since I heard about Daughters of Zion I was instantly impressed. And Dr. Kiner, not only can I see the energy he brings, I see his passion every single week. So I’m ready because there is so much possibility because when they said at the Saturday MasterClass we are going to do more this year in 2023, I said “ Let’s go!.”
Q: Of all the many, many home health agencies in Memphis, why should someone pick you?
A: Not only because of our name- New Life Personal Care but because we treat people like family. We give NEW LIFE. People need NEW LIFE. People need a better quality of life and we can give it to them. Anytime you have God at the center, it’s going to bring NEW LIFE. People have been beat up but we offer them not only the NEW but we offer them the BETTER! Just like a great cook puts love in their food, we are going to put love in what we do.
