BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – A former nursing assistant has been indicted by a grand jury for negligent homicide after the death of a patient, according to the Louisiana attorney general.

Authorities say the indictment of Diamond Johnson, of Zachary, came following an investigation by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

Johnson worked at Jefferson Manor, a nursing home in Baton Rouge. In June 2024, she was using a hydraulic lift to move a female patient from a chair to a bed when the patient slipped out of the side of the lift and landed on the feet of it, according to Murrill’s office.

The patient became unresponsive about 40 minutes after the fall and could not be resuscitated.

An autopsy revealed the patient died from complications from blunt force injuries due to the fall, Murrill’s office said.

Johnson was indicted Oct. 2 for negligent homicide.

“These cases are very difficult, but my job as Attorney General is to protect the citizens of this state; especially those who can’t protect themselves,” wrote Murrill in a Facebook post.

Johnson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
