Parents call for stronger safety measures as District 4 board member urges accountability and community support
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Germantown High School student was attacked and chased back onto campus by two people, one of whom was armed, according to Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
A parent whose daughter witnessed the attack said her child was shaken and rushed to her car when she arrived to pick her up at the end of the school day.
“She was shocked when she got into the car; she was telling me that she believed there had been something that happened with a gun,” the parent said. “I was shocked.”
The parent added she chose Germantown High because she believed it would be safer, but now questions what protections are in place.
“I picked this school because I wanted my child to be somewhere safer,” she said. “I just would like to know what they’re going to do about keeping our children safe and from this ever happening again.”
She believes that more security is needed as students leave campus.
“I think there should be more cops present, probably for a longer period of time, and until all the kids leave.”
District 4 school board member Tamarques Porter described the incident as “very disturbing,” but said MSCS police and Germantown municipal police responded quickly.
“It’s currently under investigation, and so once we find this under investigation, we just want to hold people accountable, and so I think the community deserves that; they deserve answers,” Porter said.
He noted that police already have people of interest, but emphasized that long-term solutions will require more than law enforcement.
“Students’ safety is our top priority,” Porter said. “Again, it’s not only going to take school board members or the school district, it’s going to take a community, it’s going to take mentorship [and] it’s going to take more family engagement.”
MSCS said it is working closely with law enforcement to determine what led to the events Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 26. The district has not confirmed whether any arrests have been made.
