Greater Memphis Chamber asks city council to vote against extending healthcare benefits for council members

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Greater Memphis Chamber is speaking out against the proposal which would give Memphis City Council members who served two consecutive terms healthcare benefits until they are 65.

In statement, the Chamber said the ordinance would extend a benefit to part-time council members that a third of city employees don’t enjoy.

They also said this decision is reminiscent of past financial decisions made by city council that nearly resulted in the state taking over the city’s budget.

The chamber also said the decision would erode trust with the public.

The city council is scheduled to vote on the benefits proposal on Feb. 20 after pushing the vote back their past two meetings.

Former City Councilman Martavius Jones originally proposed the move. It passed a vote back in December under the old city council. If eventually approved, it would go into effect for the three city council members who left office over the new year, including Jones.
