MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Safe Task Force is reporting more than 1,000 arrests, a major milestone in the task force’s operations.
On Friday morning, the Memphis Safe Task Force reported 1,044 total arrests in almost three weeks of operation.
The data includes reports of eight homicide arrests, 116 narcotics arrests, 110 arrests related to firearms, 48 arrests for sex offenses, 92 arrests of “known gang members,” and 418 warrants served.
The task force is also reporting that 206 firearms have been seized and 56 missing children have been found.
According to the task force, there have been a total of 187 arrests related to immigration. Six of those arrests reportedly occurred on Thursday. Immigration arrests currently account for nearly 20% of Memphis Safe Task Force arrests.
The data comes on the heels of Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris declaring a local state of emergency due to the task force’s operations.
Harris’s declaration, signed on Thursday, states that the surge in arrests has put considerable strain on local law enforcement agencies and detention centers. Harris says the current physical and financial resources cannot handle the influx of inmates.
“Despite tireless efforts by County personnel to mitigate the situation, current populations in all detention facilities of Shelby County, Tennessee, are strained and near or at maximum capacity, with staffing limited,” Harris’s declaration states.
Harris says the state of emergency will last until the end of the Memphis Safe Task Force operations or until the populations of detention centers are at or below capacity level.
