Memphis says Tyre Nichols suit would ‘essentially bankrupt’ city: court docs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Court documents show the City of Memphis believes a potential loss in a lawsuit would be devastating.

The suit was filed by RowVaughn Wells, the mother of Tyre Nichols.

The counsel is seeking $550 million in damages.

“Such an award would essentially bankrupt the City of Memphis,” the court documents read.

The city is requesting the court deny a motion for protective order, which would prevent the city from using Nichols’ cell phone records to defend itself in court.

“The Defendant (Wells) has made every effort to obtain relevant, discoverable information through discovery between the parties but has been met with resistance and obfuscation from Plaintiff all along the way,” the motion reads.

Earlier this month, three former Memphis police officers were convicted of federal civil rights violations in Tyre Nichols’ Jan. 7, 2023, traffic stop that would result in his death.

The civil case is expected to go to trial early next year.
