More than 100 people were at Cordova pool party before shooting that killed Ole Miss player

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. – More than 100 people were at a pool party that ended in gunfire and the death of incoming Ole Miss freshman football player Corey Adams, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

SCSO Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner said detectives found more than 40 shell casings from a rifle and a pistol at the scene of the shooting on Fern Glade Cove. He believes multiple weapons were used and said that there could be multiple suspects, though he did not classify the incident as an exchange of gunfire.

Those bullets began flying around 10:14 p.m. on July 19. Responding deputies found Adams in a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Paramedics performed life-saving measures at the scene, but the New Orleans native and Ole Miss freshman eventually died from his injuries. The shooting injured four other men. As of Monday, three of those men had been released from their respective hospitals.

Adams’ mother said her son arrived at the end of the party and only stayed for about 10 minutes before being shot.

“My son played football for Ole Miss,” she said. “In his off time, he just wanted to enjoy himself. When he got there, the pool party was over. He stayed 10 minutes, walked back to his car, and he got killed… My son was my all. He didn’t deserve this. He wasn’t in the streets. He wasn’t selling drugs. He wasn’t doing anything besides pursuing his dream of becoming an NFL player, and he was doing a phenomenal job, and they took it from him. I didn’t get to see him fulfill his dreams. I’m begging for somebody to please come forward and help. I just want justice. I can’t give my son the rest of what I wanted to give him in life, but the least I can do is to give him justice.”

With more than 100 people at the party, Buckner believes someone has information or video that can give Adams’ mother that justice. He asked anyone who lives in the neighborhood, which he described as normally peaceful, that has surveillance footage to contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, regardless of how inconsequential they may think their video is.

Regarding the people in attendance, Buckner urged those witnesses to contact the sheriff’s office and show the Adams’ family the best of Shelby County.

“For the 100 people at this pool party, I think there was somebody there who saw something or heard something,” Buckner said. “We need you to step up. This is how we reinvest in our city. We all need to be partners in this. Corey was a good young man. He didn’t deserve this… This family deserves closure. They deserve to see the best of Memphis, the best of our citizens here. Put yourself in the family’s shoes. If this was your child, your brother, or your nephew, what would you want to see happen? We’re asking for the best of our people.”

Buckner said that deputies were called out to the house earlier in the day regarding a noise violation. He said, from all indications, the host turned the music down following the deputies’ visit.

One of Adams’ brothers also called for people to come forward with information.

“The day before my brother got killed, I was on the phone with him, talking about practice, how it’s going. He told me he loved me for the last time. Now that he’s gone, I’ll never be able to hear those words again. So, I’m going to live by the example that he set in me and live how he wanted to fulfill our dream. I also ask that if anybody was at that pool party at that time and saw anything, I wish and pray that you’d send it over so that I can get justice for my big brother because he didn’t deserve this,” Adams’ brother said.
