MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) $3 million dollar investment funds free field trips for students of all grade levels.

MSCS launched its ‘Discovering Memphis’ initiative to provide students with free field trips to local landmarks and places where they are able to explore.

Under ‘Discovering Memphis,’ students in every grade will be open to a unique experience, officials said.

“MSCS Board and staff recognize the importance of exposing students to new experiences, spaces, and cultures that they may not have been exposed to otherwise,” said MSCS Board Member Kevin Woods.

First graders will explore the Children’s Museum, third and ninth graders will experience the newly remodeled Tom Lee Park, tenth graders will enjoy a show at Hattiloo Theatre and eighth and eleventh graders will visit the National Civil Rights Museum, according to the press release.

“Engaging in experiential learning opportunities by visiting landmarks throughout our city, such as the National Civil Rights Museum, will broaden their knowledge and understanding, allowing for a deeper appreciation for the community and world we live in,” Woods added.

MSCS said that through these explorations, MSCS is creating opportunities to enhance student learning.

MCSO Interim Superintendent Toni Williams released this statement:

“MSCS is Discovering Memphis and letting imagination take flight. These field trips are more than just outings. They enhance learning by opening doors to a world of opportunities and showing students that the entire city is their classroom.”
