MSCS still facing teacher shortage as thousands of students return to school

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Shelby County students went back to the classroom Monday! A lot of excitement filled the air at Hamilton K-8 as students arrived for the first day.
“Bringing them back to school is a joy,” Jerry Mimes, a parent, told FOX13.
While there is a lot of excitement, MSCS is dealing with some of the same issues from the last school year like teacher vacancies. Based on publicly available data, FOX13 found more than 300 open teacher positions, that is about 5% of the districts open positions. FOX13 found similar numbers with other large school districts like Metro Nashville Public Schools.
Hamilton K-8 had the most open teacher positions with 9 spots available. FOX13 spoke to parents who are optimistic the district can solve the problem.
“They’re going to make it work. Hamilton is a good school. When they’re short, they’re still going to make it work,” said William Crawford.
“Just praying they get some more teachers and they get the education they need and deserve,” LaRhonda Riley told FOX13.
MSCS says the plan for now is to have long-term substitutes, virtual teachers for hard-to-staff areas, and consolidate classrooms if necessary.
“It’s vacancies everywhere. People trying to find jobs. I believe they’ll do a real good job of taking care of business with the kids,” Jerry Mimes told FOX13.
