Second human case of West Nile virus this year reported in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. – A second human case of the West Nile virus of 2025 was reported last week in Shelby County, health officials said Monday.
The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) reported the first case in March and said it was related to travel. As for the second case, health officials did not release further details.
Health experts say the West Nile virus can cause serious illness and lead to hospitalization or death. However, most cases cause no symptoms and go undetected.
The virus is spread by infected mosquitos, health officials said.
SCHD said the West Nile virus has been detected in 32 ZIP codes in Shelby County. “With the widespread presence of the virus among mosquitoes, the Health Department urges all residents to protect themselves by wearing insect repellents that contain DEET when outdoors,” the department said in a statement.
