Shelby County court clerk warns of new phone scam
By:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A new phone scam is making the rounds across southwest Tennessee, according to the Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office.
Officials said they’ve been getting reports of scam callers contacting residents, claiming to be from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office or the General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office and accusing the resident of missing court or jury duty. The caller will then demand that you pay a fine in order to avoid legal trouble or jail time, officials said.
“Neither the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department nor the General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office is the source of these calls,” the court clerks’ office said.
They recommend that anyone who gets a call they think is fraudulent to do the following:
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not give the caller any personal or financial information
- Call the General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office at 901-222-3400 with any questions or for additional information
