Utility disconnections banned for MLGW customers during extreme heat
By:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With extreme heat in the forecast over the next few days, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) will be suspending disconnections for now.
Even if you don’t pay your bills, MLGW won’t disconnect anyone on days with a heat index of 100 degrees or more. If the customer is 60 years or older, disabled or on life support, it drops to a heat index of 95 degrees or above.
The Northcentral Electric Cooperative — which serves DeSoto, Marshall, Tate and Lafayette counties in northern Mississippi — also has a similar policy in effect Tuesday. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the utility company said it would not disconnect service for nonpayment on either this past Monday and Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, MLGW reminded customers to “make sure you are not caught off guard” with their bills as temperatures are expected to drop by midweek. “If you received a cut off notice, or have a past due bill,” the company said in a statement, “please take steps today to prevent disconnection.”
MLGW said customers can make payments or arrange a payment through their account online or call 901-544-6549 for help.
