World premiere of ‘Harriet Tubman Oratorio’ takes place at Cannon Center

A collaboration between Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Symphony Chorus and more honored Harriet Tubman’s story of courage.
A musically and historically enlightening event was held in honor of Harriet Tubman on Sunday in the city of Memphis.
“Harriet Tubman Oratorio” was held at the Cannon Center on Sunday, Feb. 11 and, as a collaboration between various musical groups, celebrated Tubman’s story of courage, determination and her unwavering spirit.
The event featured the world premiere of a composition called “This Piece,” written by Memphis Composer Earnestine Robinson.
“Something that we really believe is that, at it’s core, music is about bringing people together, and this is just a perfect example of that,” vice president of patron engagement with the Memphis Symphony Brandon Knisley said. “We couldn’t have done this alone, and that’s the way we would have wanted it. We want to do things in collaboration.”
All in all, the performance was a collaborative effort between the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Symphony Chorus, the Mississippi Boulevard Church Chorus and several youth choruses from around Memphis.
