MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For 15 Memphis-area youth, a visit to Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid on Sunday offered more than an afternoon outing. It marked the launch of a broader effort by Daughters of Zion to connect young people—including youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities—to outdoor recreation, community experiences and opportunities they may not otherwise have.

The outing served as the first experience under Camp Covenant Adventures™, an expanding year-round recreational initiative supported through the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging’s Youth Developmental Camp Grant.

Camp Covenant Adventures™ participants gather in front of the aquarium at Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid during the September 27 outing. The experience introduced youth to wildlife, fishing and outdoor recreation.

The grant is helping Daughters of Zion expand non-academic recreational opportunities for youth ages 5 through 22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities while creating inclusive environments where participating youth can enjoy experiences alongside siblings, peers, friends and family members.

During Sunday’s outing, participants explored wildlife displays, fishing equipment and other features related to outdoor recreation and conservation while gaining exposure to activities such as fishing, camping, boating, hunting and nature exploration.

For several of the young participants, the experience provided an introduction to aspects of outdoorsmanship they had never previously encountered.

The larger Camp Covenant Adventures plan includes monthly recreational experiences, major outdoor adventure activities and a summer camp experience designed to expose participating youth to new environments while building confidence, social interaction, physical activity and family engagement.

For Daughters of Zion, Sunday’s visit represented an important first step in expanding what young people can see, experience and imagine for themselves.

Exposure creates opportunity—and sometimes the beginning of a new interest, new confidence or new dream can start with simply being given the opportunity to experience something for the first time.

Families and Community Invited to Participate

Daughters of Zion is inviting families of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other special needs to become part of Camp Covenant Adventures™ and is encouraging families, schools, churches, disability organizations and community partners to recommend young people who could benefit from the program.

Families are also encouraged to involve siblings, peers and friends, helping create an inclusive recreational environment where young people of differing abilities can participate, explore and build relationships together.

There is no cost to eligible participating youth and families whenever possible.
