93% of women stressed out by finances, data shows

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Women might be doctors, first responders and world leaders.

However, 93% of women are stressed out by finances, according to this report by Fidelity Investments.

“It does cause a tremendous amount of stress,” said Dr. Kathy Tuberville, the faculty director for the Fogelman Women in Leadership program at the University of Memphis. “Until there is a change in either pay compression or salary wages, there’s going to be some issue for women whose salary is not competitive.”

“When you think about what causes that stress, it’s worry, it’s fear, it’s anxiety,” said Felecia Walker, the founder of ‘The Focus Group by Felecia.’
Negotiating for more
“Nobody’s going to guess what you want or what you need,” said Maggie Osborn, a High Point Terrace resident.
She told FOX13 that she has successfully negotiated for more money and more time with her family in her career.

“Until you come and say, ‘Tthis is what I need (and) here are going to be my boundaries,’ they won’t be accepted or respected or interpreted for you,” Osborn said.

The wage gap is a major obstacle: Women make only 78 percent of every dollar a man makes, according to this report.

It’s even worse for women of color: Black women make 66 cents for every dollar and Hispanic women make 74 cents for every dollar.

Dr. Tuberville recommends that woman apply for higher paying jobs for which they might not even think they are qualified.

“The worst anybody can say is no,” she said.

She also said women with seniority should negotiate for more pay. Employers would much rather promote an existing employee than train a brand new person.

“Negotiate for who you are and the skills you bring to the table,” Dr. Tuberville said.

How does a woman negotiate?

“I think it’s very important to celebrate your milestones,” Walker said. “Be loud about it.”

Walker recommends that women highlight the value that they bring to the company and why they would be difficult to replace.

“The more confident you become in your yourself, the more confident you become in your skillset,” she said. “When you walk into a room, you absolutely know that you deserve to be there.”
