Mayor Paul Young hosts town hall meeting with Memphis Hispanic, Latino community

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – We are three months into 2024 and Memphis crime is still a major burden to the citizens that live here.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young planned to go into local neighborhoods to get feedback from people about these safety issues.

Most recently, Young paid a visit to Berclair, where he addressed the Hispanic and Latino communities.

The community of the Berclair Neighborhood took to the floor at Friday night’s community meeting and pleaded to the mayor for help and safety.

“Please help us to help the Hispanic community, the American community,” one Berclair resident said as he stood at the mic sharing his concerns with Young. “Why doesn’t this happen in Germantown? Why doesn’t this happen in Bartlett? Why doesn’t this happen in Collierville, but in Memphis, there are people doing donuts right in front of police officers on Highway 240.”

The individuals of the Hispanic and Latino community pleaded out to City Hall leaders, desperately in search of solutions that would lead to more peaceful neighborhoods.

One of the main concerns addressed Friday night as Mayor Young continues his community tour across Memphis, was crime.

“We are just tired of being one of the worst cities in the United States,” one guest said.

“People get robbed. People get killed. Sometimes people get robbed in broad daylight,” community organizer Monica Sanchez told FOX13.

Mayor Young addressed the media Friday saying his team is working from every angle to make sure they are getting the results that people need.

“We are trying to take a balanced approach. We’ve been doing a lot around a surging of enforcement in different areas of the community. We did the Mount Moriah area precinct about 2-weeks ago. We did Ridgeway last week. We’ve got Airways coming up soon, so we’re working hard to make sure that we are showing a force to make sure that there’s a presence in our community, so people feel a sense of safety,” Young said.

City Hall expects to host similar meetings every month.

No announcement has been made about where the next location will be.
