Councilwoman Cooper-Sutton clashes with residents at community meeting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A community meeting in Westwood led to a heated exchange between an elected official and residents Wednesday afternoon.

City council member Yolanda Cooper-Sutton has been “touring” community centers throughout her district to highlight improvements and hear community feedback.

She couldn’t make it to the meeting in Westwood due to a family emergency, but did call in for questions.

However, that didn’t sit well with some in attendance.

As some expressed concerns over the “pace of improvements” at the Westwood Center, the councilwoman “insisted” there were “several improvements” in the works behind the scenes and then voiced her “frustration” over the city council’s decision on data centers.

“Behind the scenes, I’m trying to work and get this money that normally you don’t hear about or see people even working. I’ve been three years in this here battling, trying to fight. I’m the one that was first against Elon Musk. I asked the council not to do the deal with him,” Councilwoman Cooper-Sutton said.

She was recently suspended from her leadership duties at the city council and did not vote during Tuesday night’s meeting.
