Convicted killer accidentally let out of jail in 2025 captured
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A convicted murderer mistakenly released from the Shelby County Jail more than a year ago is back in custody.
Anthony Green, 25, was captured Wednesday afternoon by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team, U.S. Marshals and members of the Memphis Safe Task Force.
The SCSO said deputies and U.S. Marshals, acting on tips received, executed a warrant and arrested Green in the 3300 block of Knights Trail in Memphis.

On September 24, 2025, Green was accidentally released from the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar just minutes after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in the 2020 shooting death of Octavious Atkins,
Although a judge immediately revoked Green’s $500,000 bond, he was released from jail after posting a $2,500 bond in a separate 2025 misdemeanor theft case.
The sheriff’s office conducted an internal investigation and found that it was responsible for the procedural lapse.
Memphis Police said Octavious Atkins was in a car near Shelby Drive and Neely Road when Green pulled up and fired shots, killing Atkins and injuring another passenger.
Atkins’ loved one told WREG they were outraged by the error.

Chiquita Williams said her cousin and Atkins’ mother thought she was finally getting some closure when Green was found guilty, but was reliving her son’s death all over again.
“As she stood over her son’s casket, she promised him that she would get him justice. She said she was extremely hurt to leave the court, to leave downtown, and in the thirty minutes that it took her to get home, he was walking out,” said Williams. “She’s hurting, she’s numb, and now she’s going through this all again as if she just lost him.”
Green was transported to the main jail at 201 Poplar on charges of First Degree Murder, Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder, and Employing a Firearm with intent to Commit a Felony.
