Christian Brothers University will be changing its athletic affiliation from NCAA Division II to NAIA for the 2027-28 season.

In an official statement from CBU’s President, Robert L. Brandon, the university will pursue membership in the NAIA’s Mid-South Conference. CBU has submitted its application and the NAIA is expected to formally act on this application during its fall meeting later this month.

“I want to be clear about our commitment to our current student-athletes. This transition does not change the scholarship or financial aid commitments CBU has made to them,” said Brandon. “Our responsibility is to support our students well throughout this transition and to communicate openly as additional details are finalized. I am grateful for the partnership and candor of our coaches, athletics staff, and student-athletes as we move forward.”

CBU has competed in NCAA Division II since the 1996-97 season. However, if approved, the university will be returning to a time of their past.

CBU competed in the NAIA for nearly four decades before moving to the NCAA. The CBU board of trustees has approved the move, but the NAIA has the final say in its meeting later in September.

The university plans to provide more details as the transition is finalized. Brandon believes this move gives CBU a “stronger and more sustainable platform” to support their student athletes.
