MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A Collierville dealership employee is facing charges after taking a customer’s vehicle for a drive to a local sports bar.

Memphis police said they received a call on Jan. 17 from a woman who reported her car stolen from the Mercedes-Benz of Collierville dealership on South Houston Levee Road in Collierville.

The woman said she dropped off her vehicle on Dec. 10 for repairs. She said she realized it had been taken after the tracking device in her vehicle alerted her to movement.

The car was located at TJ Mulligan’s on Houston Levee Road in Cordova.

Officers on scene found the woman’s key fob on a man employed at the dealership as a service technician, identified as Derrick Nguyen.

According to the arrest affidavit, officers noted Nguyen was intoxicated and refused to answer questions without a lawyer present.

Nguyen was arrested and charged with theft of property $10,000 to $60,000.

The victim’s lawyer posted on social media Friday, accusing the dealership of making light of the situation and offering deals.

“Mercedes-Benz Collierville apparently not only thinks this situation and lawsuit is funny — they are now marketing and attempting to profit from this horrible situation. And yes, it is our understanding that he STILL WORKS THERE and they are defending his actions as just fine! Mind blowing! See you in court on April 9 to get a trial date…,” the post said.
