MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The popular East Memphis restaurant Houston’s has permanently closed, according to the restaurant chain’s website.
The website now shows the restaurant at 5000 Poplar Ave. as “permanently closed.”
A statement from the site blamed staffing and public safety.
The full statement reads:
“After much deliberation we have closed our Memphis Houston’s ~ Regretfully, the operating environment in the vicinity has become increasingly difficult over the years, both with respect to staffing and public safety. While we know this development will be disappointing to many of our guests, it is a decision that was not made lightly. We would like to thank our guests for their support and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you at another one of our locations.”
A Black couple sued the restaurant group in May 2023, claiming that in August 2022, a White manager kicked them out of the Memphis restaurant because “they smelled like weed.” That lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice in January 2024, according to court records.
