MSCS school board member speaks out, shows support for firing Superintendent Marie Feagins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Eyes continue to focus on the school board for Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) after a chaotic meeting Tuesday night.
One of the board members spoke out Wednesday in support of firing MSCS Superintendent Marie Feagins.
“My initial thought was, when I first came down the elevator, I was shocked,” said MSCS board member Towanna Murphy. “I knew that the community was coming out, but I didn’t know they were coming out like that.”
Tuesday night’s special called meeting to discuss terminating Feagins’ contract drew a passionate crowd, with many expressing strong opinions on the superintendent’s tenure.
“For the community to come and act like that, it went national that we can’t behave,” Murphy said.
Murphy made her stance clear Tuesday night, voicing support for the termination of the superintendent’s contract. She said that as a school board member, she has seen things differently and believes Feagins broke her contract and hurt people in the process.
“When you are on the other side of the fence, which I am now, I see something different,” Murphy said. “Now we have contracts that have not been signed, we have programs that Dr. Feagins has canceled and we have nothing else in place.”
However, in June, then-candidate Murphy posted on Facebook in support of Feagins, defending the superintendent after the board criticized her for planned staff cuts. FOX13 asked how her support has changed since then.
“We tried to support the new superintendent, and we tried hard to support her, but we’re not getting the same response back,” Murphy said. “That’s a problem for us. I have tried. I can’t be around Dr. Feagins one-on-one.”
