CORDOVA, Tenn. – An 18-year-old Ole Miss football player died and four others were injured in a shooting Saturday night in Cordova, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said.
SCSO identified the victim as Corey Adams of New Orleans.
Adams’ former high school football team, the Edna Karr Cougars in New Orleans, mourned the loss in a Facebook post, saying that “Corey Adams was more than a football player. He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all-around great young man.”
Adams was a freshman at Ole Miss. The university’s official football page said the program was heartbroken by his death.
“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee,” the university said in a statement Sunday. “While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Deputies responded to the shooting outside a residence on Fern Glade Cove around 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
SCSO said deputies stopped a vehicle and found a man with a gunshot wound at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove. They provided life-saving measures until Shelby County Fire arrived, but he tragically died on the scene.
At Fern Glade Cove, deputies said they learned four men arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds. All were listed in non-critical condition. Deputies also found multiple shell casings at the scene.
SCSO detectives are investigating the homicide and urged anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
