JUPITER, Fla. — Golf legend Tiger Woods was released on bail Friday night after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a rollover crash near his home in Jupiter, Florida.
At a news conference, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said the crash occurred just after 2 p.m. ET. Woods was driving erratically behind a pressure-washer trailer on a two-lane road. He swerved to get around the trailer and clipped the back corner, causing his black Range Rover to roll onto the driver’s side door.
Woods needed to climb through the passenger door to get out of his vehicle. The speed limit on the road was 30 miles per hour, and it’s unclear how fast Woods was driving.
No one was injured in the crash, but the sheriff said it could have been much worse if there had been oncoming traffic when the crash happened.
Woods “did exemplify signs of an impairment,” Budensiek said, adding that investigators believe he had taken “some type of medication or drug.” He said Woods agreed to a Breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol, but refused a urine test and was arrested.

The sheriff said that because Woods refused the urine test, they don’t expect they will ever get clear answers about what he might have been impaired with at the time of the crash.
Authorities arrested Woods on suspicion of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, Budensiek said. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Woods was booked into jail, where the sheriff said he was not receiving preferential treatment and he was cooperating, but was also “trying to not incriminate himself.”
Under Florida law, he had to spend eight hours in jail before he could post bail. He was released shortly before midnight.
The crash came days after Woods returned to his first competitive golf round in more than a year at TGL.
Friday’s arrest comes as Woods was trying to decide if he was fit enough to play the Masters, which starts April 9. Woods has been rehabbing a ruptured Achilles tendon that happened just over a year ago.
Woods also was days away from what was described as a “soft deadline” to decide whether to be the U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland.

President Donald Trump, whose former daughter-in-law is dating Tiger Woods, was asked about the golfer when he landed in Miami on Friday afternoon for an investment summit.
“I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulty,” Trump said. “Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person. Amazing man. But, some difficulty.”
This isn’t the first time that Tiger Woods has been involved in a serious car crash. In 2021, the golfing legend crashed his car in California. Woods suffered extensive leg injuries in that crash and was not able to play competitive golf for an extended time. Woods ultimately had several surgeries on his leg due to the injuries sustained.
Deputies said Woods was not impaired by drugs or alcohol following the rollover wreck that took place on a downhill stretch of road known for crashes.
He was also arrested on a DUI charge in 2017 when South Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car that was parked awkwardly with damage to the driver’s side. Woods said later he had taken a bad mix of painkillers.
