#19 Memphis loses third straight game in 97-88 loss to UAB

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The #19 ranked Memphis Tigers lost to the UAB Blazers 97-88. The result makes it three straight games that the Tigers have lost.

David Jones led Memphis with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 steals. Malcolm Dandridge scored 19 points.

Yaxel Lendeborg led the Blazers with 23 points and 16 rebounds (10 offensive) as Eric Gaines added 20 points and 4 steals.

The game’s story was Memphis’ sloppy play as the Tigers finished with 22 turnovers, 13 coming in the first half.

The Tigers started the game 8-for-8 from the field in the first few minutes, but seven turnovers allowed the Blazers to keep it close.

Memphis finished the first half with 13 turnovers. Rebounding hurt the Tigers as UAB grabbed nine offensive rebounds, just one shy from matching Memphis’ defensive rebound total.

David Jones and Malcolm Dandridge proved to be a bright spot for Memphis in the first half, scoring 10 points each.

Jordan Brown entered the game for Memphis for the first time since December 2 versus Ole Miss.

For UAB, Yaxel Lendeborg led the way with 16 first-half points. Eric Gaines scored 11 points, including two three-pointers, one to give UAB the halftime lead.

Blazers led 45-44 at the half.

Memphis started the second half struggling as turnovers continued to be an issue.

UAB took control as the Blazers increased by as much as 15 points.

Memphis attempted a comeback effort by bringing the lead down to seven points, but it was too late.

The win marks the first-ranked win for UAB since 2006.

Memphis will look to snap its three-game losing streak Wednesday as they return home to face Rice.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the FedExForum and televised on ESPN+.
