59 contestants to compete in first SmokeSlam barbecue contest

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — SmokeSlam, the new barbecue cooking contest coming to Tom Lee Park from May 16-18, has confirmed a total of 59 teams are set to compete.

Mempho Presents made the announcement on Wednesday. The registered teams range from 11 states, some are as far as Wisconsin and Arizona.

Thirty-nine teams will compete in all three categories, including whole hog, ribs, and pulled pork.

There will be 33 teams competing in the whole hog contest, 46 in pulled pork, and 56 in ribs.

In addition to the SmokeSlam BBQ festival, the World Jr. BBQ League will host a youth BBQ competition and award $25,000 in prizes.

“I can’t wait to see what these young pit masters cook up this May,” said Melissa Cookston, Founder of World Junior BBQ League.

Only individuals who are members of WJBL and between the ages of 14 and 18 or currently enrolled in high school may participate in the WJBL competition at SmokeSlam. More information can be found here.

SmokeSlam organizers say the idea behind the festivasl was that it could be a place for the whole family to enjoy a day or weekend of food, fun, activities, and interactive demonstrations.
