4 new Cyclosporiasis cases reported in Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There are now four new cases of the Cyclosporiasis parasite in Shelby County, health department officials said Thursday.
Officials say there are now 15 total cases and that 14 of those cases who contracted the illness had a history of travel outside of the county.
Back in July, WREG reported there were 11 confirmed cases of the parasite.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, and the infection is most often linked to consuming fresh produce.
Below is a list of symptoms associated with the illness:
- Watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Stomach cramps or bloating
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Low-grade fever
Cyclosporiasis is not commonly transmitted person-to-person,” said Dr. Bruce Randolph, Interim Health Director and Health Officer for the Shelby County Health Department. “Symptoms are usually self-limiting, but seek medical attention if you experience prolonged or severe diarrhea. Without treatment, symptoms may persist for several weeks.”
Health officials recommend that you wash your hands with soap after using the bathroom and before and after preparing food, wash fresh produce under running water, and refrigerate peeled or cut produce immediately.
