As part of our follow-up to the progress the Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP grantee is making within Memphis, Shelby County, and beyond- we are highlighting the weekly Entrepreneur of the Week Award. Ronda Freeman was chosen as entrepreneur of the week, and when asked why, Dr. Gerald Kiner, Ph.D. declared, “Ronda Freeman is extremely impressive. She is driven. She is passionate. She is concerned about the healthcare field and about those who enter it. Her high level of integrity and professionalism is going to take over the educational field as we know it, especially for students pursuing lucrative careers in the medical field. There is a high demand for high caliber and high integrity people. Ronda meets that demand. It is said that the number 54 represents manifestation, creation, and building something from scratch. Ronda represents just that as she is using her integrity and character to reshape the world of healthcare by manifesting a new era of healthcare professionals. It is with great pleasure that I announce Ronda Freeman as our 54th entrepreneur of the week.”

Q: Please state your name and the name of your company.

A: My name is Ronda Freeman and I am the proud owner of Compass Career College LLC.

Q: How did you come up with that awesome name?

A: Well the tag to that is “guide your career in the right direction” and that’s what a compass does. It guides when you are lost, it guides you in the right direction.  I also love the scripture that says that God is a lamp unto our feet.  He will give us what we need to straighten out that pathway. So Compass came to me in a dream and that’s what I use.

Q: What careers are you going to provide?

A: I’m going to start off with a CNA course and then I hope to expand. I’ve looked into phlebotomy, LPN programs and surgical tech programs.

Q: What made you want to start your business?

A: Well, I have been in the healthcare field for about 30 years and in that time I’ve seen how things have changed. We need to bring integrity back into healthcare just like any other job.  We need to bring that professionalism in the job and that’s what I plan to do. Task on hand and that’s what I’m going to teach.

Q: What makes you stand out from the competition?

A: Well, #1 everybody has a different vision. God doesn’t give everybody the same vision. When you go to a Marathon gas station, they provide gas but they also provide chicken.  If you go to Chevron, they provide gas. They may not provide that chicken so it’s something different that each program will offer but my program, as I say, I’m going to bring professionalism.” You’re going to learn that. You are going to learn to be on time. You know we have late people coming into work all the time.  You will learn how to be on time.  You are going to learn how to have your uniform neat and clean. I don’t care if you have to throw it in the dryer. You’re going to learn life skills. Not only life skills but you will learn how to be a productive adult worker.

Q: How did you find out about Daughters of Zion SBA CNPP?

A: Through a friend, Pat Sipp. She told me about it. I was inquiring about her because I know she does a lot in the community and she said you need to come over here on Saturdays and I said ok I’m going to come. So through a friend.

Q: What would you say to other business owners about why they should become a part of the Daughters of Zion SBA Community Navigator Pilot Program?

A: Awesome, awesome information not only for just business people, this is information for life that people need to know about. You need to know that you need a renewed mind. That’s what you are teaching to think beyond you know, the norm and that’s what I learned today.  I had so many opportunities going in my head because of the information that I received today. I would say come because they are going to learn to connect with other people, like-minded people. So that connection like you said, if I need somebody to do some, let me go through my rolodex and my book. I know the person to do that for me.

Q: What is the greatest testimony you have gotten in the healthcare profession?

A: One of my patients told me you have been doing this a long time haven’t you and I said yea, she said how long, I said almost 30 years. She said, yes I can tell. She said you move differently. She said you are compassionate. You take your time and you listen to me and I really appreciate that.  We are dealing with sick people.  Sick people beyond those beyond 10-15 years ago. These are sick people and they need that compassion and they need to know that you care about them. They need to know that you are knowledgeable about what you are doing. We are service people so they need to know that.

Q: Anything else you would want your prospective students to know about you?

A: Well, my vision is to teach them how to go out in the community and have a Godlike mind.  We are there to serve others, we are there to show compassion and love. Something that they may not have when they leave that hospital, nursing home. We need to show them the light that’s in us and that’s what my students are going to do. I don’t care what economical background you come from. When you put on this uniform, you are going to be a different person, a better you so when they come to any program that I’m under. They will be a better them when they leave.

Q: Let me ask you some fun facts about yourself. What is your favorite food? What do you like to do in your free time? What movies do you like? What’s your favorite color? What’s something about you that not many people know?

A: I love barbeque. Barbeque ribs is my favorite. It may not like me but I love it. My mom is a good cook so I love her dressing, her chicken and dressing so barbeque and chicken and dressing. I like to go to movies. I enjoy movies, I like to spend time with my family. I’m a family person so I love to spend time with my children. They’re both adults but I love talking to them. We facetime each and every day. We don’t miss it. So I love spending time with them.I like action movies, right now I can’t wait for Bad Boys 4 to come out. I’m looking forward to that. And I like romance. You know God is love and  I believe in man and woman sharing life together. So I believe in romance and I love thrillers. I don’t do scary movies but anything that’s a mystery I enjoy. Purple – royalty. I’m a quiet person really and most people think I’m an extravert that I love being out. It’s easy for me to meet people but I have my quiet time. I love quiet time
