MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis Police Department has arrested and charged a man they say stole thousands of dollars from an elderly assisted living resident.

In October of last year, a power of attorney filed a complaint regarding misplaced funds on behalf of a 96-year-old man.

According to the affidavit, the victim’s address was changed on all his bank account information at the Regions Bank.

The victim later confirmed that the address change was fraudulent and she did not authorize it.

A representative with the bank reviewed the victim’s bank statements and found multiple transactions via CashApp.

Investigators also found a transaction made on a car leased under the name of Demeries Brooks.

They also discovered that there had been a card linked to the account that was making several transactions.

Brooks had been a former employee of the Regions Bank and worked there as a teller.

Police say that he used the victim’s account for multiple transactions amounting to $18,357.70.

After reviewing the surveillance footage, Demeries Brooks was identified as the suspect.

Brooks was booked into jail on April 30, 2024.

He is now facing charges for identity theft and financial exploitation of an elderly person.
