Shelby County Observer Community Service Staff – June 16, 2025

MEMPHIS, TN — Daughters of Zion will host the 2nd annual ShelbySafe: Don’t Touch A Gun, Stop The Violence, Youth Mental Health Day on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Event Center of Memphis- 4400 Hickory Hill Rd, beginning at 11 a.m. Sponsored through the Tennessee Department of Health’s Division of Health Disparities Elimination (Competitive Health Program), the event aims to combat Shelby County’s gun violence through hands-on education and community engagement.

Why it matters:

According to the Shelby County Health Department, gun violence is a public health crisis. Memphis ranked as the second most dangerous U.S. city in 2023, with alarming spikes in youth-involved incidents: juvenile gun incidents rose 30% in 2021, and juvenile-level gun charges climbed 13.3% in 2023. Over 2,300 guns were stolen from vehicles by September 2021.

What’s happening at ShelbySafe 2025:

  • A campaign pledge drive urging youth and adults to commit to non-violence

  • A citywide social media outreach targeting 250,000 residents

  • Live entertainment, waterslides, food, and community prizes

  • New this year: booths featuring mental health services, workforce training, and educational resources

Last year’s results: Over 250 pledges from youth and adults, plus strong community turnout supporting conflict‑resolution messaging.

This year, Daughters of Zion anticipates 100–500 attendees and looks to dramatically increase pledges and outreach.
