Grizzlies MLK Sports Legacy Awards honor former shortstop Ozzie Smith, 3 more

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sports Legacy Awards for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Game will be presented to four former athletes, including former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith.

Smith, nicknamed “The Wizard,” along with former pro basketball players Alex English and Renee Montgomery, and former NFL running back Calvin Hill, are the 22nd annual event’s honorees.

The event is sponsored by the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Grizzlies, the City of Memphis and Shelby County.

Hill’s son and former NBA basketball player, Grant Hill, received the award in 2017.

They will be honored prior to the 5 p.m. tipoff of the Memphis Grizzlies basketball game vs. Golden State on Jan. 15th at FedExForum.

On Sunday, Jan. 14, the honorees and other guests will tour the National Civil Rights Museum, followed by a discussion panel on the Intersection of Race and Sport starting at 6 p.m.

Before the game, a symposium will be held that will include discussions with the honorees, starting at 3:30 p.m., inside the Grizzlies training facility in FedExForum.
