Houston, MASE, Melrose win thrillers to advance to state championship games

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -Friday night featured four high school state semifinal games in the Memphis area, and the slate did not disappoint. Three teams from the 901 are headed to state in Chattanooga next weekend: Houston, MASE, Melrose.
In Class 6A, the defending state champion Mustangs battled Ravenwood, and prevailed in a back-and-forth affair 24-21. Houston will try to go back-to-back next weekend in a championship game rematch from last year with Oakland.
The most improbable result of the night came courtesy of MASE in a 1A battle at Crump against McKenzie. The Phoenix trailed 21-0 and 34-12 before launching a miraculous comeback to claim a 44-38 victory. MASE will face South Pittsburg for a gold ball next week.
In 4A, Melrose persevered in a defensive battle against Pearl-Cohn in Orange Mound. The Golden Wildcats trailed the entire game until the final minute, when star Jamarion Morrow scored the game-winning touchdown to give Melrose a 14-7 triumph. The Golden Wildcats will clash with Macon County in the state championship game.
Also in 2A, Fairley came up just short against Milan, falling at home 2-16.
