SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) – Shelby County Mayor-elect Mickell Lowery and Sheriff-elect Anthony Buckner were sworn into office Monday afternoon.
Lowery is replacing outgoing Mayor Lee Harris. Buckner is replacing Sheriff Floyd Bonner. Eight new commissioners are also coming into office.
Buckner said one of his biggest priorities is working with Lowery on the Shelby County Jail after nearly 70 deaths were reported at 201 Poplar since 2018.
Buckner also said building trust is a focus for his administration.
“Oftentimes they are the ones who disseminate, especially on Sunday mornings, a lot of information. We want to make sure they feel connected to the sheriff’s office, so building public community and public trust is a key focus for our administration,” Buckner said.
Buckner said he’s grateful for everyone stepping up to devote their time and talent to help move Shelby County forward.
Buckner will become the 48th sheriff of Shelby County.
