Scholarship challenge generates $1M for 36 new UofM scholarships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Ahead of “Giving Tuesday,” an entrepreneur and philanthropist along with his wife announce new scholarship fundraising effort totals at the University of Memphis.

Mike and Marian Bruns initiated a matching scholarship grant in September 2020.

The 36 scholarships totaling $3 million represent a record-breaking number at the UofM, school officials announced today in a press release.

The Bruns challenged alumni and others to join them in efforts to increase the number of graduating students at the UofM through the creation of a new endowed scholarship.

“I knew I had to help when I learned that awards as little as $700 can make a difference between a student graduating and dropping,” Mike Bruns said.  “When we all come together, we can make an impact on the lives of students for generations to come.”

Kimberly Grantham, UofM interim vice president for advancement, lauded the impact of the scholarships.

“Through this investment, students who are struggling to fund their college education will feel the relief of that burden be lifted,” said Kimberly Grantham, interim vice president for advancement.

The funds raised matched through the Bruns Scholarship Challenge fund will bolster 38 established scholarships, including 14 in the Fogleman College of Business and Economics.
