TBI investigating fatal officer-involved shooting at Pilot Travel Center

By:

FAYETTE COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed they are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at the new Pilot Travel Center.

The travel center opened Wednesday morning at exit 42 on I-40 in Fayette County.

Preliminary information obtained by the TBI states that deputies responded to the business after a reported stabbing.

When deputies confronted the male suspect, they said that the situation escalated and resulted in at least one deputy firing shots and striking him.

According to the TBI, the suspect appeared to have sustained self-inflicted stab wounds prior to and during the exchange with deputies.

He ended up passing away on the scene. His cause of death has not been determined yet.

WREG obtained a video of a disturbance that occurred before the shooting.

In a portion of the video, you can hear someone tell the man to “put that knife down” to which he replies “No.”

A civilian who was allegedly stabbed and wounded by the suspect was treated and released from the hospital.

No law enforcement officers were hurt during the incident.

Pilot Travel Center provided WREG with the following statement:

Our thoughts are with all those involved in the incident at our travel center located at 7530 Highway 222 in Mason, TN. The safety of our team members and guests is our number one priority and we will work with authorities as they continue to investigate this incident.”

Billy Leach, Pilot’s Manager of External Marketing

On Sunday morning, WREG noticed that the store was closed as officials with the company carried out their own investigation into what happened.

It opened back up around 11 a.m.
