City of Germantown looks to shut down party house
GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – The City of Germantown took action against a homeowner who held a party at his house.
A press release from the city claims that the “private residence (was) being used and marketed as an event and entertainment venue.” The city is seeking an injunction to address that event.
The party that drew negative attention from the city and some neighbors took place on July 21 at the home on Forest Hill Irene Road. City officials claim that the party at the home was “advertised to include an admission charge and the unlicensed sale of alcoholic beverages,” therefore advertising the residential property as a commercial event and entertainment venue.
Economic and Community Development and Code Enforcement to address business-like events of this nature going forward. “Adherence to city and county ordinances and state law that are meant to protect the quiet enjoyment of residential neighborhoods is paramount,” Germantown Mayor Palazzolo said in a press release. “Taking action to enforce the code ensures that events on private property do not conflict with the intent of our neighborhood zoning.”
The injunction filed by the city claims that the “unauthorized use of the residential property” created neighborhood disturbances, including “noise, congestion, and the presence of illegal substances, which negatively affect the health and well-being of the community and unnecessarily strain municipal resources.”
FOX13 spoke to the homeowner, Lonny Jackson, who said he has the right to use his property however he likes.
“It’s my home,” Johnson said. “If I chose to wake up tomorrow and have another event, I feel like I should be able to do so.”
City of Germantown officials said they expect to have a hearing scheduled before the Shelby-County Chancellor by mid-August.
