City of Marianna, Arkansas, issues State of Emergency, curfew for Easter weekend due to gun violence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The City of Mariana, in Lee County, Arkansas, is under a curfew Easter weekend due to a “significant and troubling increase in gun violence.”
According to a post to the Marianna Police Department’s social media, the city’s mayor and council declared a State of Emergency after a rise in violence in the area. A curfew has been initiated, effective from 8 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024, until midnight, Sunday, March 31.
“This decision was not made lightly but is essential to ensure the safety and security of all residents of Marianna,” the statement reads.
Here’s what the city said the curfew means for residents:
- Mandatory curfew for non-essential personnel will be enforced from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.
- All public gatherings, including outdoor events, are suspended during this period.
- There will be an increased presence of law enforcement and emergency personnel.
Residents are asked to stay indoors during curfew hours unless it’s necessary to leave. Police ask that any suspicious activities or emergencies be reported at 870-295-2508.
The statement ends, “We understand that these measures may pose an inconvenience, but the safety and well-being of our community are our top priorities. Together we can overcome the crisis and restore peace and security to our beloved city.”
