City of Memphis installs concrete barriers at parks to prevent reckless driving

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The City of Memphis stated in an email to FOX13 it has installed concrete barriers in Martin Luther King Junior Riverside Park and Douglass Park.

The city said it installed the barriers to prevent curb burnouts and sliding.

“I think this is a great idea because this is supposed to be a family area where families can come out an enjoy themselves or someone looking for a quiet serene surrounding and now that these vandals have taken over. It’s no longer a family experience. It’s almost a life-changing experience out here,” said Warren Jones, a Memphis driver.

The city said the barriers are a temporary fix until leaders can come up with an alternative.

“You have a three thousand pound projectile that you’re out here playing game with. That’s a dangerous weapon that you have, almost a weapon of mass destruction depending on how it’s used,” adds Jones.

Jones said he feels laws should be changed.

“Well because they know it’s a misdemeanor and they know the police policy is that they don’t chase misdemeanors … but if they change the laws and make it a felony then police will have more broad power to combat it, but the police are being handicapped. They can’t do anything,” said Jones.
