East Memphis doctor indicted, accused of fraud, sexual coercion

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An East Memphis doctor has been indicted on 23 federal charges, including health care fraud and coercing people into sexual acts.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, 44, was reportedly taken into custody after the federal government filed an indictment against him on Thursday. The indictment was unsealed on Friday afternoon.

The federal government is claiming that between September 2019 and April 2024, Kumar “engaged in a series of crimes, frauds, and other acts that abused the trust of both the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and his patients.”

According to the indictment, Kumar is accused of conducting unnecessary medical procedures, reusing devices that were designated as “single use” without properly cleaning or disinfecting the devices, and falsely billing health care insurance programs including Medicare and Medicaid.

The indictment also states that from around September 2019 to June 2024, Kumar coerced four victims to travel to Memphis to engage in sexual acts with him.

If convicted, Kumar faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, $250,000 fine, and a supervised release of at least five years.

Kumar operated the Clinic of Women’s Health and Med Spa on Poplar Avenue near Kirby Parkway. Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant at the clinic in April 2024.

Before this indictment, Kumar had not faced disciplinary action with the Tennessee Department of Health.

Acting U.S. Attorney Reagan Fondren released a statement on Kumar’s indictment.

“Kumar was consistently the top-paid provider in Tennessee for Medicare and Medicaid for hysteroscopy biopsy services, and he profited substantially from these criminal acts. The allegations indicate that Kumar acted as a predator in a white coat and used the cover of conducting medical examinations to put his patients at risk and enrich himself.”

The FBI is now seeking the public’s help in identifying potential victims. Anyone who believes they may be a victim or has possibly been affected by these incidents is asked to visit the FBI’s website and complete a questionnaire.
